Happy Fourth of July

Happy July 4th!!!    On this federal holiday, also known as Independence Day, this marks the Colonies’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, which declared independence from the Great Britain and its king.  There are many interesting facts about this holiday, but one that I thought was interesting is that in 1776 there were 2.5 million people living in the United States verses over 325.3 million people in 2017.

We are getting to the middle of summer and the OLD RED TRAIL has been busy with bicyclists.  When I was in Tellmann’s Market one day I visited with a young man who was riding from Boston to Seattle, all alone, and he was riding for St. Jude’s Hospital.  Another day I saw two families (two – four seated bikes)  just starting out from Tellmann’s Market.  And this is just a handful of all the bikers that are riding the trail.

There are many festivals coming up this summer along the OLD RED TRAIL.   And a past festival – the Roughrider Days in Dickinson.   I had the opportunity to attend the Parade in Dickinson this past Saturday.    I enjoyed it and we had a perfect spot to watch it with chairs and shade.  I do like it when they throw toothbrushes, toilet paper, flowers, Frisbees, etc.  It seems there is always so much candy.   In Hebron Watermelon Days will be held on July 7-9.  A water carnival and burger feed will be held on Friday.  Free watermelon, street games, and the Dakken Memorial Bike Run on Saturday with a dinner and dance with the bands “Silver Nickel” and “Moscow” in the evening.  On Sunday the Mud Run Stock Car Race will be held at 2:00 PM.

In Glen Ullin, the Lions sponsor Burgers in the Park (Burlington Park on South Avenue) on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month.  Burgers are served from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM.

Also watch for more information about the Glen Ullin Annual Harvest Fest on September 16-17 with a parade, games, food and entertainment.

New Salem will hold its annual Cow Town-Hoe Down on July 14-16.  The parade theme this year is “A Night at the Movies”.  The weekend is jam packed with a tractor trek, music and a car show on Friday.  Saturday starts with breakfast, a parade, arts and crafts show, races, team roping at the rodeo grounds, a golf tournament, and a pitch fork fondue in the downtown park.  The evening winds up with a street dance and the band “October Road” will get you hopping.  The weekend winds down on Sunday with the Demolition Derby.  Food will be served all weekend.

Welcome to the Taylor Horse Fest to be held this year on July 29-30.    This 24 year old event takes a step back in time with a non- motorized parade, crafts and food vendors, exhibitors, children’s activities, and music. During the day on Saturday, there will be demonstrations of mowing, haying, hay stacking and cultivating - - - all with horses.  Tigirlily will be featured in concert on Saturday evening.

There are plenty of activities in the upcoming weeks in the towns along the OLD RED TRAIL.  So driving the OLD RED TRAIL is fascinating and beautiful;  Until next time, Be Well, Do Good Works, and see you on the OLD RED TRAIL.
